Itinerary Peru Vacation: Cusco, Machu Picchu and Puno 6 days

DAY 1: CUSCO CITY AND SURROUNDINGS

We warmly welcome you and will pick you up from Cusco airport to transfer you to your hotel. After lunch, we will pick you up from your hotel around 1:00 PM to begin our city tour, starting with Cusco Cathedral, one of the most important temples in Peru, consisting of three buildings: the Basilica, the Triumph, and the Holy Family. Inside, you will find artistic pieces created by the Cusco school.

Next, we will visit Qoricancha, a marvelous site built by the Incas for sun worship and later modified by the Spaniards during the Viceroyalty for the evangelization of indigenous people. Inside, you can still observe walls built with great precision by the Incas, along with artistic Catholic religious pieces.

We will continue our guided tour by exploring the archaeological sites around Cusco. We will start with Sacsayhuaman, which means “satisfied falcon”. This site was built with enormous stone blocks and, during the Inca period, was known as the “House of the Sun”. It was an important religious center in the local tradition.

Then, we will head to Q'enqo, which means “labyrinth” in Quechua, named for its underground galleries and small canals carved in zigzag patterns. We will continue our journey with a visit to Puca Pucara, also known as the “Red Fortress”, built with red-toned stones. Finally, we will reach Tambomachay, an Inca shrine dedicated to water.

We’ll conclude our tour at the beautiful Plaza de Armas in Cusco, around 6:00 PM.

Don’t forget to take the classic photo in the plaza’s warm atmosphere, despite the cool Cusco nights. If you enjoy nightlife, you will find many discos and bars around the square, filled with tourists and locals looking to have fun.

DAY 2: SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS – AGUAS CALIENTES

We will start our day with breakfast at your hotel. At around 7:30 AM, we will pick you up from your hotel and head to the Archaeological Site of Pisac, located 45 minutes from Cusco. Pisac will give you an idea of the advanced architectural knowledge the Incas achieved during their time.

Some studies reveal that it was not a fortress, but rather a royal hacienda during the reign of Inca Pachacutec, composed of terraces, domestic and ceremonial structures, and aqueducts that provided water for agriculture. Another compelling reason to visit Pisac is its craft market, where you can find unique and authentic souvenirs.

At noon, we will head to the town of Urubamba for a buffet lunch, where you can enjoy delicious Peruvian cuisine. Urubamba was one of the main agricultural centers of the Inca Empire. Today, the best corn in the world is cultivated here, and during the rainy season, the valley is filled with native fruits such as peaches, capulí, quince, and high-quality strawberries.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Ollantaytambo Fortress, which was an agricultural, religious, and astronomical center. This is evidenced by the colcas, storage facilities for agricultural products that utilized the wind for preservation, and by the finely carved, strategically placed stone blocks aligned with the Sun God to manage and control the Sacred Valley.

This archaeological site comprises a series of superimposed terraces, showing the impressive and large stone blocks located on the upper terrace. In Ollantaytambo, we’ll board the train to Aguas Calientes to visit Machu Picchu early the next day.

Its lush green terraces and the imposing mountain range surrounding it create a breathtaking landscape that exceeds all expectations. You will be amazed by its enormous, impressive stone blocks perfectly fitted together, making Machu Picchu one of the most important religious, political, and cultural centers of the Inca Empire.
