Kuelap

Located high in the Peruvian Andes, it is an amazing complex of stone structures of the Chachapoyas culture.

DESCRIPTION

Kuélap is an impressive archaeological complex located high in the Peruvian Andes, in the Amazonas region. Built by the Chachapoyas culture, this site is situated at 3,000 meters above sea level and stretches over nearly 600 meters. The fortress is surrounded by a wall that in some points reaches 19 meters in height. Kuélap is known for its monumental architecture and its function as a well-organized population center, which includes administrative, religious, ceremonial, and residential enclosures.

LOCATION

Kuelap is located 35 kilometers south of the modern city of Chachapoyas, in the upper part of the Utcubamba River valley, in the district of El Tingo, Amazonas Region, at 3,000 meters above sea level.

ATTRACTIONS

Among the main attractions of Kuélap are the Great Wall, an imposing stone structure that offers an impressive view and is a testament to the architectural skill of the Chachapoyas; the Circular Enclosures, which served as dwellings and ceremonial spaces, decorated with friezes and other unique architectural elements; the Main Temple, one of the most important buildings used for religious ceremonies; and the Viewpoint, from where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Utcubamba River valley and the surrounding mountains.
