Lares Trek to Machu Picchu is a 4-day trek filled with beautiful Andean landscapes, culture, nature, and breathtaking views on our Lares Tour, culminating in the unforgettable experience of exploring Machu Picchu. From the picturesque village of Lares to the majestic Inca citadel, this journey will take you through stunning Andean landscapes, rejuvenating thermal baths, and local communities steeped in rich traditions. You will enjoy challenging hikes, observe diverse Andean fauna, and savor the serenity of the Sacred Valley. With accommodation in comfortable campsites and a hotel in Aguas Calientes, this tour promises to be a memorable experience where history, adventure, and natural beauty come together to create unique moments.
Our journey begins with an early departure at 6:00 a.m. heading towards Lares (located 3 hours by car from Cusco), a charming destination situated at 3,100 meters above sea level. Here, we will enjoy a nutritious breakfast, followed by a relaxing time at the renowned Lares hot springs, known for their therapeutic properties. Later, we embark on a approximately four-hour hike to our campsite in Huacawasi, located at 3,900 meters. This route offers us a unique experience, immersing ourselves in the stunning landscapes of the Andes and providing the opportunity to interact with local communities and their rich culture.
Overnight camping in Huacawasi.
After replenishing our energy with a hearty breakfast, we prepare for the most challenging day of our expedition. The 8-hour journey takes us to the highest point of our route, Abra Ipsay, located at 4,490 meters above sea level. This segment of the hike is a deep dive into Andean lifestyle, offering unparalleled opportunities to observe and photograph the diverse local fauna, including alpacas, llamas, vizcachas, and, with luck, the majestic condor. On this day, we will also make a stop at the peaceful Ipsaycocha lagoon, culminating our day at the second campsite in Pata Cancha.
Overnight camping in Patacancha.
This third day is notably lighter compared to the previous ones. Our path takes us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, gradually descending towards Ollantaytambo. At this stage, we will pass through Willoq and Pumamarca, two villages renowned for their ancestral skill in textile craftsmanship and colorful attire. Upon reaching Ollantaytambo, we will enjoy lunch before boarding the train that will take us to Aguas Calientes. This train journey is an incredible experience, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and mountains of the Peruvian highlands.
After approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, we will arrive at the town of Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where we can explore, rest, and prepare for the next day (The visit to the Wonder of the World - Machu Picchu).
Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes.
The last day of our tour is undoubtedly the most anticipated as we will finally visit Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the modern world. We will start our day very early to experience the sunrise in this mystical Inca citadel. An experienced guide will accompany us on a tour of approximately two hours through the most iconic sites of Machu Picchu, revealing the secrets of its history and architecture. After the guided tour, you will have the option to ascend either Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu mountains, for which a prior reservation is required. The adventure concludes with a bus journey back to Aguas Calientes, followed by a train ride to Ollantaytambo, where transportation will be waiting to take us back to Cusco, bringing an unforgettable experience to an end.
