Itinerary Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu 5 Days

DAY 1: Cusco | Mollepata - Challacancha - Soraypampa (Humantay Lake)

We begin our tour by picking you up from your hotel at 5:00 AM. Our journey starts with a scenic four-hour drive, crossing the picturesque landscapes of Anta and Mollepata, culminating in Challacancha. During the first two hours, we will make a brief stop in Mollepata, where you’ll have access to restrooms and the opportunity to explore local souvenir shops. You can also enjoy an optional light breakfast in this charming town. This initial stop immerses us in the cultural and natural richness of the region as we prepare for the exciting experiences that lie ahead.

From Mollepata, we continue towards Challacancha, the starting point of our hike. Upon arrival, we meet our support staff, who will organize the equipment and pack the mules. We then embark on our trek to Soraypampa (3,850 m / 12,631 ft), the first camp on our journey. Covering a distance of 7 km (4.35 miles) in approximately three hours, we arrive at Soraypampa, where a delicious lunch awaits us at the Salkantay base camp.

After lunch and a short rest, we set off to explore the unforgettable Humantay Lake, located at an altitude of 4,200 m (13,779 ft). Known for its dazzling turquoise waters, the lake’s vibrant color results from mineral deposits in the water. It offers a breathtaking visual and spiritual experience. This serene mountain lake not only captivates visitors with its scenic beauty but is also considered sacred by local communities, attracting travelers seeking a deeper spiritual connection with nature and the surrounding environment.

Once we have explored the lake and absorbed its tranquility, we return to our camp. This experience will leave us with lasting memories of this natural jewel and a deeper appreciation for the connection between people and nature in this unique corner of the Peruvian Andes.

DAY 2: Soraypampa | Salkantay Pass — Wayracpunku — Chaullay

After an early wake-up with the first light of day at 5:30 AM and a delicious breakfast, we begin the trek to the highest point of the trail: the Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,255 ft). This challenging ascent covers 7 km (4.34 miles) over approximately 4 hours, taking us through a rocky valley to the base of the majestic Salkantay Mountain (6,271 m / 20,574 ft).

Following the climb, we continue with a 5 km descent to our lunch site at Huayracmachay.

In the afternoon, after enjoying a hearty meal, we enter the upper Amazon jungle, known as the “cloud forest”. This part of the journey takes us along a lush and winding trail through dense tropical forest, covering 10 km over 3 hours. Along the way, we’ll encounter incredible biodiversity, including endemic birds and a variety of hummingbirds, drawn to the colorful flowers native to this region.

This is the most demanding day of the trek, with a total walking distance of approximately 22 km (13.67 miles).

DAY 3: Chaullay | Collpapampa — La Playa — Lucmabamba

At 6:00 AM, we begin our hike towards the warm town of La Playa, following the scenic trail through the beautiful Santa Teresa Valley. Along the way, we are captivated by the beauty of Collpapampa, also known as the “front of the cloud forest”. As we proceed, the landscape transforms into a more tropical, lower-altitude environment, where you can observe the appearance of avocado, banana, coffee, cacao, pineapple, and mandarin trees, among others.

This region is also home to a variety of exotic birds, adding to the diversity and richness of the journey. After a delicious lunch in La Playa, we continue with a short walk of approximately one hour to our base camp at Lucmabamba, located at 2,100 meters above sea level (7,874 feet). This peaceful retreat offers a chance to explore the surrounding natural treasures and appreciate the cultural richness of the region. During our hike, we may also spot various endemic bird species.

In the afternoon, after settling into our camp, you will have the opportunity to take the “coffee tour”. This hands-on experience will guide you through the entire coffee production process—from harvesting and roasting to grinding—culminating in the tasting of this delicious, organic coffee.

DAY 4: Lucmabamba | Llactapata — Hydroelectric — Aguas Calientes

We start early with a delicious breakfast, followed by a two-hour ascent along a Qhapaq Ñan (Royal Inca Trail), offering breathtaking views of the picturesque Santa Teresa Valley. Our trek takes us to the magical site of Llactapata, located directly across from the majestic Machu Picchu. Here, among ancient stones, we will breathe in the air of history and magic, immersing ourselves in the legends that surround this sacred place. After exploring the enigmatic Llactapata ruins, we continue with a serene two-hour downhill walk. Along the way, we will witness the harmonious fusion of lush nature and the enduring legacy of the ancient Inca civilization.

Our journey takes us to the Hidroeléctrica train station, where we will stop for a freshly prepared lunch by our chef. Afterward, we visit Intiwatana, an ancient stone monument used as a sundial during Inca times. This site offers us a glimpse into the wisdom of ancient cultures, revealing secrets long-lost to time.

Continuing along the path, we follow the train tracks leading to the charming town of Aguas Calientes, our destination for the night.

At this point, you have two options:

  • Take the train: If you feel tired, you may opt for a comfortable train ride to Aguas Calientes for an additional cost of $37.00, ensuring a peaceful journey.
  • Walk the trail: If you're still eager to explore, you can walk from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes. This trek, which follows the train tracks and takes approximately three hours, offers a deeper connection with the natural surroundings, allowing you to take in every detail of the landscape.

Whichever option you choose, both provide an excellent way to reach Aguas Calientes, each offering its own unique experience.

DAY 5: Aguas Calientes — Machu Picchu — Cusco

This is the most anticipated day—our visit to one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: Machu Picchu! We will rise early to begin our ascent to the top of this iconic site. The entrance control point of Machu Picchu is open from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. You can either walk to the entrance or opt for a bus ride for $12.00.

Once inside, we will embark on a 2-hour guided tour through this breathtaking ancient city. We will explore its temples, terraces, palaces, priests' quarters, the sundial, the industrial sector, and the agricultural fields. Be amazed by the Incas' architectural and engineering ingenuity, which was far ahead of its time and remains partially a mystery today! Despite lacking modern tools, steel, or iron, the Incas built this community sustainably, bringing water through stone channels along the streets for public use, all while constructing it beautifully on the side of a mountain.

You are welcome to stay and enjoy the magical ambiance of Machu Picchu for up to 3 hours, making the most of this unforgettable experience.

INCLUDES:
