The mountain is known for awakening the spirits of other mountains like Nevado Tucarhuay and Nevado Humantay, and for offering beautiful landscapes, from peaks and snow-capped mountains to lush tropical jungles, high-altitude vegetation, and flowers of all shapes and colors. It is a popular destination for hiking and trekking, and it is a great alternative to the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu. Cusco - Mollepata Chaullay - Soray Pampa

We will depart from Cusco at 5:00 AM to begin the unforgettable Salkantay Trek, an alternative route to the Inca Trail, heading towards Marcoccasa and passing through the town of Mollepata.

In Marcoccasa, we will meet the muleteers and the rest of the group before starting our hike. We will begin our hike through a magnificent valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains like Humantay and Salkantay.

Finally, we will arrive at our first campsite in Soraypampa, where we will rest for the night.

Soray Pampa - Salkantay Pass - Chaullay

After breakfast, we will head to the Salkantay Pass, which provides an exceptional view of the snow-capped Salkantay peak.

From there, we will descend on foot into the cloud forest, taking time to appreciate the diverse vegetation of this unique ecosystem.

Our campsite will be in Rayampata, nestled in the tropical rainforest with warm and pleasant weather.

Chaullay - Hydroelectric - Aguas Calientes

After enjoying a delicious breakfast, we will continue through the forest, where the vegetation is lush and abundant. We’ll have the opportunity to admire a wide variety of orchids, bromeliads, and bomareas, among other native plants.

Our route will also take us to Lucmabamba, a charming town located at 2,000 meters above sea level. There, we will have the opportunity to visit some local families, immersing ourselves in their culture and traditions. We will enjoy a traditional lunch to recharge our energy for the next stage of our journey.

We will continue our journey to La Playa, located at 2,100 meters above sea level, where our comfortable vehicle will be waiting to take us to the hydroelectric station. From there, we will take the train to the town of Aguas Calientes, where we will spend the night.

Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Cusco

After an early breakfast, we will take a tourist bus to Machu Picchu (2,400 m). We will enter the historic sanctuary early to begin our Machu Picchu tour, immersing ourselves in the magic of this ancient place and enjoying breathtaking views from the Inca citadel.

Following this unforgettable moment, our guide will lead the tour, providing deeper insights into the history and architecture of this marvelous site. Please note that the visit is currently limited to a maximum of three hours.

After the tour, we will take a bus back to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch and to explore the town, known for its variety of restaurants and craft shops. From Aguas Calientes, we will board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where our transportation will be waiting to take you to your hotel in Cusco, concluding our Salkantay-Machu Picchu trek.

Inca Trail Salkantay to Machu Picchu Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco — Mollepata — Chaullay — Soray Pampa

Departing from Cusco at 5:00 a.m., we embark on the exciting journey along the Salkantay route, an alternative to the Inca Trail. Our first stop is Chaullay, located at 3,400 meters above sea level, after passing through the picturesque town of Mollepata at 2,800 meters.

In Chaullay, we will meet the muleteers and the rest of the group before officially starting our adventure. We begin our hike in a breathtaking valley surrounded by majestic snow-capped mountains, including Humantay (5,217 m) and Salkantay (6,264 m). These mountains are impressive not only for their towering heights, but also for their cultural significance and natural beauty, attracting adventurers and nature lovers from around the world.

As we traverse diverse valleys, we will have the opportunity to observe the daily life of local farmers before arriving at our first campsite in Soraypampa. Our chef will welcome us with hot drinks, snacks, and a delicious light meal. Once we regain our strength, we can visit the Humantay Lagoon before returning to camp, where hot drinks and a delightful dinner will be waiting for us.

The night will be cold due to the high altitude, but we will be surrounded by the serene beauty of the Andes, concluding an unforgettable first day on our trek.

DAY 2: Soray Pampa — Salkantay Pass — Chaullay

After a delicious breakfast, we will head toward the Salkantay Pass, allowing us to enjoy a variety of stunning landscapes, ranging from forests to snow-capped mountains and beautiful valleys. Additionally, we will take in exceptional views of the Salkantay Glacier. The biodiversity in this region is remarkable, offering travelers the chance to observe a wide range of flora and fauna at an altitude of 4,600 meters above sea level. As we descend, we will re-enter an environment rich with vegetation, exploring the diversity of the surrounding ecosystem.

Our day will conclude as we set up camp in Chaullay, located at 2,800 meters (9,186 feet) above sea level. Here, surrounded by the lush tropical jungle and enjoying warm, welcoming weather, we will have the perfect opportunity to relax and immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of this magical place.

DAY 3: Chaullay — Playa — Hydroelectric — Aguas Calientes

We start the day with a delicious breakfast and begin descending through the forest, where the abundant vegetation offers a stunning display of diverse flowers, including orchids, bromeliads, bomareas, and other species. This enchanting walk allows us to immerse ourselves in the natural richness of the surroundings, appreciating the unique biodiversity found in this tropical forest.

Our journey continues as we visit the welcoming families in the towns of Playa and Lucmabamba, located at 2,000 meters (6,561 feet) above sea level. Here, we will enjoy a delicious homemade lunch. We will also participate in a unique "coffee tour" with the local community, where you can experience the process of harvesting, roasting, and tasting organic coffee—personally harvested by you.

After this fascinating experience, we will travel by vehicle on a one-hour journey to the town of Santa Teresa. From there, we will head to Hydroelectric on a 1.5-hour trip. At this point, we’ll continue our journey by train, following a scenic route that leads us to the charming town of Aguas Calientes. This journey offers an opportunity to connect with the local community and admire the natural beauty of the region. We will spend the night in Aguas Calientes.

DAY 4: Aguas Calientes — Machu Picchu — Cusco

After enjoying an early breakfast, we will take a 25-minute journey by tourist bus to Machu Picchu, situated at 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) above sea level. Arriving at the historic sanctuary just in time for sunrise, we will immerse ourselves in the mystical energy of this ancient site. Open your arms to embrace the magic that surrounds Machu Picchu and marvel at the breathtaking view of the Inca citadel. This is a moment we have eagerly awaited—a true encounter with living history and the ancestral essence of the Incas.

After this awe-inspiring experience, our expert guide will lead us on a fascinating journey through the history and architecture of Machu Picchu. It’s important to note that visits are limited to a maximum of 3 hours.
