After breakfast at the hotel, we will pick you up at 8:00 AM and begin our journey to the archaeological site of Pisac, located 45 minutes from Cusco. Pisac offers insight into the advanced architectural knowledge achieved by the Incas. As with other Inca constructions, studies suggest that Pisac was not a fortress, but rather a type of ‘royal estate’ owned by Inca Pachacutec. It features terraces, domestic and ceremonial structures, and aqueducts that supplied water for agriculture. Another highlight of Pisac is its handicraft market, where you’ll find unique and authentic souvenirs.
At noon, we will head to the town of Urubamba for lunch, giving you the chance to enjoy Peru’s delicious cuisine. Urubamba was a key agricultural center during the Inca Empire, and today, it’s known for producing the world’s best corn. During the rainy season, the valley also yields fruits such as peaches, capulí, quince, and premium strawberries.
In the afternoon, we will visit the fortress of Ollantaytambo, which served as a strategic military, agricultural, and religious center for administering and controlling the Sacred Valley. This is inferred from the structures believed to have been used for agricultural storage and military purposes, such as walls and watchtowers. This archaeological site consists of a series of terraced platforms, featuring impressive, large blocks of finely carved stone placed on the upper terrace.
In Ollantaytambo, we’ll board the train to Aguas Calientes, preparing for our visit to Machu Picchu early the next morning.
