It has 215,868.96 hectares; it is located in the central part of the basin of Urubamba, at Ausangate Mountain Chain, district of Echarate,, province of La Convención (department of Cusco).

This area is one of the few that its vegetation is still intact and it allows to connect the high Andean Plateau to the lower jungle, home of the majestic “Mayne”, the name of the famous brown bear in native language. Crossing the Pongo is an awesome experience for all the lovers of the adventure and the nature. In the road, you will watch many waterfalls, and an interesting fauna such as the Guacamayo Militar, el Gallito de las Rocas, anteojos bear and a great variety of monkeys like: Machín Negro, Maquisapa, Choro, etc.

It is believed that the point of interchanging between Incas and Amazon natives was the Pomgo of Mainique, natural limit between the Alto and Bajo Urubamba, and it was a holy place for both cultures. According myths and legends of origin Machiguenga, this was the area where their culture was created. It’s believed also that in this place represented the historic connection between the Andean World and the Amazon World. From here the cobbled roads start to come into the denseness of the Amazon in direction to different cities and fortresses.

The only alternative of accommodation in this area is the Centro Machiguenga para estudios tropicales (Machiguenga Centre for tropical research). The owners of this place are the 125 families of the native community of Timpía, a zone that has not been much explored in the Peruvian Amazon.
