Location
It is located in the southwest, 15 miles from Cusco (30 minutes by car). Oropesa is a beautiful place with a great square and is rich church, in the middle of a quiet environment, the smell that comes from this community is very good, being that 20-30% of the population are bread makers.
The district of Oropesa is made up of the south side of the Sacred Valley, and every year they celebrate the gastronomy festival of Tanta Raymi or bread feast, with a particular exposition of sales and the tasting of Andean bread, also one can see the demonstration and preparation of the famous bread “chutas” and the traditional “Oropesa bread” this is the most important festivity of Oropesa.
Oropesa has many ovens; if you’re looking to taste good bread, fresh and delicious, don’t hesitate to go in one of the many ovens near the square to have one. You can recognize because all the stores with ovens have a huge basket outside, if you go inside you’ll see the brad makers in action, and may be you could make your own bread. Here in this ovens they use eucalyptus leafs which have a very pleasant aroma.
The church of Oropesa shows the people that come to see it; the pulpit is decorated and sculpted beautifully. The temple presents a unique characteristic made only in churches around these parts that is the open church. This kind of balcony is unique by its façade, is very typical of the Indian towns and from here the priest used to celebrate the mass to all the community.
How to get to Oropesa?
In the route to Puno, you can take a Private Tour, private transportation or public transportation. It takes an average of 40 minutes to get there form Cusco.
